Laifang on the Way · Lecture 10
The Way Never Ceases, Life Never Ends
In today’s world, when people speak of “longevity,”
they often imagine life-extension technologies,
cellular regeneration, or the uploading of consciousness to AI.
But is this kind of extension true longevity?
If what we prolong is anxiety, emptiness, or disconnection,
then we are not lengthening life—
we are simply staying lost for longer.
What the ancients meant by “longevity”
was not merely to avoid death,
but to live in sync with the Way, in harmony with heaven and earth.
Not just to live longer,
but to live with greater steadiness,
clarity, and depth.
True Longevity Is the Continuous Flow
of the Way Through Life
Longevity is the movement from opposition to continuity.
A human being can keep “growing” oneself—
not by extending a single lifespan,
but by continually renewing, awakening, and transcending from within.
Premier Zhou’s Two Forms of Life:
Living for the Future, and Living Beyond Death
Premier Zhou’s life was never lived for himself.
He lived for the people, for peace,
and for the long-term stability of those who would come after.
他活着,是为了一个更持久的世界;
What he sought was not the prolonging of his own life,
but the creation of a path on which others might truly live.
He lived for a more enduring world.
And in his passing, he left a direction that still endures.
This was the first form of his life:
To live for the future, for peace,
and to make lasting harmony truly possible.
他走后,人民仍在讲述他;
孩子们在画中、诗中遇见他;
But there was another kind of life he lived—
a spiritual, immortal life that remains alive in human hearts.
After he left, people still spoke of him.
Children met him in poems and paintings.
Scholars, diplomats, and ordinary people alike
found traces of him in their everyday lives.
This was his second form of life:
The spirit never dies. The Way never ends.
Laifang’s Note
Longevity is the transcendence of life and death as opposites,
entering a unified, unending flow between the two.
Premier Zhou’s generation lived with greatness and died with honor.
They were born for peace, and died for enduring harmony.
If we in this generation can continue asking:
“How do we live long and see clearly?”
“How do we make peace endure?”
Then we, too, are continuing the Way.
