Maryland University Summit, 2022

Maryland-China Summit; December 3-4, 2022
Above: an excerpt from the Summit by Michael North,
president and co-founder of the Zhou Enlai Peace Institute
Topic: “The Five Principles of Peace”

General Introduction to the Summit:

After approximately 3 years of pandemic challenges, the world is now going through profound changes. We are again at a turning point in history.

The unanticipated global pandemic  helped us fully realize that we, as human individuals, are weak and fragile. The arrival of setbacks, however, sometimes symbolizes a moment in which the dominant order may be transformed, and a larger world vision may be ushered in.

We, Chinese students at University of Maryland, are an important component of the  younger generation in the new century, and we shoulder great historic responsibility. Looking back over the past 107 years of historic events, how dare we forget our forefathers’ efforts?

We, one face in a sea of faces, should always examine ourselves and keep telling ourselves: “Hold to the conviction that I will do whatever it takes to serve our country even at the cost of our lives, regardless of fortune or misfortune to ourselves” — or “The superior man should be cautious when he is concealed, and should be respected even though he stays where he is heard by nobody else.”

From the moment we took the flag from the forefathers, our mission and journey began — working very hard, on the other side of the Pacific Ocean, to make a contribution to China-US communication and interchange.

Let us redouble our efforts to continue to create something beautiful and share it with different people.
