Laifang on the Way · Lecture 11
All Things Are Alive, All Thoughts Return to One

The Way gives birth to One, One to Two, Two to Three, and Three to all things.

This is one of the most profound lines in the Tao te Ching.
It describes the movement from formlessness to form, from unity to multiplicity—
and also our return, from the many back to the Way.

一,是未分;二,是分化;三,是互动;

One is the undivided source; Two is contrast; Three is movement.
All things arise from this—not in chaos,
but each bearing the mark of the Way.

Heaven Gives Birth to Water, the Way Begins in Softness

The ancients said: “Heaven gives birth to water through One.”
This means the first thing the Way brings forth is not fire or metal,
but water—softest, stillest, most nurturing without striving.

它下流而不屈,润物而不语;

Water is the Way’s first material form.
It yields, yet never breaks. It nourishes, but does not boast.
It falls as rain, carries boats, carves through stone.
Water is the posture of the Way.

All Things Are Alive, for the Way Dwells Within

他看树,不是木材,而是静默的生命;

A true follower of the Way doesn’t look with human eyes,
but with awakened sensing. A tree is not lumber, but quiet life;
a stone is not dead, but enduring memory.

Spirit is not magic.
It is the innate capacity in all things to respond, to resonate, to align with the Way.

你若静静对视一株草,它也会颔首;
你若用心坐在溪边,水流会慢下来;

Gaze at a blade of grass quietly, and it may bow to you.
Sit with presence beside a stream, and it may soften its current.
Honor a stone, and it may bloom.

This is the echo of the Way within all things,
spirit calling to spirit.

To Return to One Is Not to Erase Difference, but to Recognize Common Origin

Returning all thoughts to One does not mean suppressing variety,
nor withdrawing from a chaotic world,
but remaining centered amidst complexity,
and finding the Way of peace within conflict.

Premier Zhou Enlai embodied this with quiet mastery.

In 1936, during the Xi’an Incident, the nation stood at the edge of civil war.
Instead of using force or confrontation, Premier Zhou entered the crisis with the stillness of One.
He mediated between Chiang Kai-shek and Zhang Xueliang, not with pressure, but presence.
His calm helped turn swords into dialogue—
a quiet act that shifted the course of history.

With the steadiness of one man, he brought turning to a nation.
This is the power of returning to One—
to see shared origin within division,
and summon peace from the heart of discord.

Laifang’s Note

To follow the Way is not to escape confusion,
but to see the One within the many—
stillness in the wind, presence in the water,
spirit in all things, each with a place to return.

To return to One is not shrinking,
but expanding the heart—vast enough for all things, fine enough for a single thought.
Through emptiness, we carry the fullness of being.
